Kids Cancer Project

About

The Kids’ Cancer Project’s mission is simply to help all kids survive cancer and live healthy lives after treatment by funding vital research into more effective treatments. Since 1993, they’ve committed over $70 million to this cause. Existing in the ever-changing digital age, they recognised the need to modernise their operations to better serve their community of donors and raise lifesaving funds more effectively. That’s why, in 2022, they partnered with mcrIT, and the journey towards a more efficient and secure future began.

The situation

Before mcrIT’s involvement, The Kids’ Cancer Project was operating with a mix of outdated systems and manual backups. Their digital transformation was in the initial stages, with only email migrated to Microsoft 365. Legacy firewalls and on-premise file servers were still in use, relying on local Active Directory for authentication. This setup requires the use of a VPN to access the company network and poses a challenge to support remote work reliable connections. Their users faced downtime if the servers crashed, impacting productivity. There were also frustrating VPN connection dropouts, further hindering their workflow.

The mcrIT Solution

Realising the shortcomings of the existing set-up, the management team at The Kids’ Cancer Project knew they needed a more reliable and efficient solution. Henry Yuen, Head of Technology and Data said:

“mcrIT’s expertise in digital transformation and commitment to our cause were evident from the start. One of the most remarkable improvements was the significant enhancement in our secure score with Microsoft. This shift represented a monumental step forward in safeguarding our sensitive data and ensuring the integrity of our operations.”

mcrIT implemented a comprehensive solution:

  • Complete cloud migration: All data and applications were migrated to the cloud, paving the way for improved accessibility and collaboration.
  • Empowering tools: Microsoft SharePoint and Intranet on SharePoint streamlined internal communication, while Single Sign-On (SSO) for Zoom simplified virtual interactions.
  • Enhanced security measures: A robust cloud backup system, fortified email security solutions, and encryption on all devices ensure critical data remains safeguarded.
  • Proactive monitoring: Advanced alerting and monitoring mechanisms ensure potential issues are identified before they can escalate.
  • Efficient authentication: The integration of Azure Active Directory eased the authentication process for users, enhancing their experience.

Outcomes

As a result of the partnership with mcrIT, the revamped system has provided:

  • Flexibility for hybrid work: Employees now enjoy greater flexibility in how and where they work, enabling a seamless blend of in-office and remote tasks.
  • Heightened security measures: Implementing Microsoft SSO for third-party apps has bolstered security posture, reducing potential vulnerabilities.
  • Improved security controls: The introduction of remote mobile device management has elevated the overall security controls, ensuring the safety of sensitive data.
  • Enhanced reporting: Patch compliance and threat analytics are now automatically shared with the management team, enabling informed decision-making.
  • Improved secure score: Thanks to stringent security measures, The Kids’ Cancer Project’s secure score has surged from 40% to an impressive 82%, validating the effectiveness of the transformation.

“Our partnership with mcrIT has not only streamlined our operations but also reinforced our commitment to our cause. With their unwavering support, we’re better equipped than ever to do our best job in raising funds to support vital kids’ cancer research, all while embracing the potential of the digital age.”  Henry Yuen, Head of Technology and Data.
