Established in 1977, Barbeques Galore is a well-known name and leader in Australia’s barbeque retail market. With more than 90 stores across the country and counting, the business provides high-quality barbeques, heating and outdoor furniture in-store and online.
Barbeques Galore seeks to provide customers with the best shopping experience possible with contactless click and collect options, expert assistance, spare parts, barbeque removal, and a large product range. Operating in a country where outdoor living products are in high demand, the company relies on its IT infrastructure to keep up with growth and changes in the market.
The Project
Barbeques Galore needed to upgrade their virtual server environment, storage efficiency and performance and backup speeds to support company store expansion, customer growth, user experience and business continuity.
The Challenge
Due to aging infrastructure, Barbeques Galore was facing a bottleneck with bandwidth and backups. The bottleneck was also causing backups to take over a day to complete on average. To overcome these challenges, Barbeques Galore decided to undertake an infrastructure review.

The mcrIT Solution
With a longstanding relationship starting in 2000, Barbeques Galore chose mcrIT to complete their infrastructure review and upgrade. They had already completed a refresh with mcrIT in 2015 when the business consolidated their infrastructure and migrated it to HPE servers and moved from a VMWare environment to a Hyper-V environment.
This new project in was a collaborative effort, with mcrIT project managing the implementation to get the new hardware online and Barbeques Galore migrating their infrastructure over to the new environment. The new environment features industry leading HPE Gen 10 servers, Veeam Backup and Recovery, HPE Nimble Storage, and a Microsoft Hyper V platform.
As bandwidth was a key factor, 10 gigabit cards were included in the servers to provide the maximum bandwidth they required to support growth.
Outcomes
The IT infrastructure upgrade supports the Barbeques Galore expansion with scalable storage that can keep up with increasing demand. HPE Gen 10 servers combined with Nimble Storage provides industry-leading performance.
The upgrade has noticeably improved user experience especially with file access and has also reduced the time to run backups by at least an average of about 30% or an average of 4 hours, helping to prevent bottlenecks and potential loss of data.
